Mission
Statement
We are dedicated to the
principle that music, both its appreciation and its performance, can be a
lifetime activity, and that a community should provide the facilities that
make this end possible.
The North Suburban
Symphony provides an opportunity for amateur musicians of all ages to play
standard works of the symphonic repertoire under skilled conductors. To
what end are all the music lessons for our children if there is no outlet
for their abilities later in life?
The North Suburban
Symphony concerts are scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sundays and last about an
hour and a half. Thus they are accessible to the elderly who do not attend
evening performances, as well as to families with children, for whom the
time of day and the length of the concerts encourage coming to the
performances with children. It should be noted that one concert each year
is identified and programmed as a "Children's Concert".
The North Suburban
Symphony helps support the efforts of music teachers and schools in the
area by sponsoring and annual James Glacking Young Artists Music
Competition, and featuring the winner of that competition as the soloist in
a concert the following year.
The North Suburban
Symphony special presentation with audience participation is a yearly
do-it-yourself Holiday performance in December with paid soloists to
benefit WGN radio's PADS. Area choirs are invited to perform with us.
Smaller instrumental
ensembles formed by orchestra members volunteer though out the year
presenting music programs n area communities. Our "Goodwill String
Quartet" plays for senior citizen nursing homes, church raffles to
benefit their programs, veteran's hospitals, schools, children's nursing
homes, in particular the Marklund Home, and for various other community
based programs.
