James Glacking Young Musicians Competition

The competition is open to any vocalist, string or wind instrument performer (except pianists) currently in grades 9 through 12 who resides in Lake County, IL or Northern Cook County (outside the Chicago city limits).

For 2007, the finalists included: (left to right below) Cassie Shudak, Buffalo Grove HS, Ryan Meehan, New Trier HS, Ryan Murphy, Maine South HS, Hyunjin Jessica Cho, Glenbrook South HS, Ben Fried, Highland Park HS, and Leah Ferguson, New Trier HS.

Ryan Murphy and Ben Fried tied for 1st place, and Ryan Meehan took 2nd place.

Ryan Murphy will perform Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole for our March Concert, and Ben Fried will perform Saint-Saëns 1st Cello Concerto for our May Concert.

Ryan Murphy won the Midwest Young Artists Junior strings division of the Walgreen's National Concerto Competition in 2005 and won second place in the senior division of that competition in 2007.  He won the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Illinois Junior Strings competition in 2005 and honorable mention in the North Central Division of MTNA in 2006.  Ryan has participated in the Midwest Young Artists Orchestras for six years and has been a member of a piano trio there for three years.  His piano trio has twice advanced to the quarter finals of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and won the 2008 National Chamber Music Competition.  He is currently a concertmaster of the Maine south High School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. 

Ben Fried is presently a student of Professor Hans Jorgen Jensen of Northwestern University.  He is a member of the Highland Park High School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. He won this years Highland Park High School Concerto Competition and performed the Saint Saens Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Symphony Orchestra. He has soloed with the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra.
He studies Klezmer technique, and is also a member of the Music Institute of Chicago Academy and an avid chamber musician with the CYSO Con Fuoco ensemble. He was the youngest, and only, sophomore cellist in the 2008 Illinois All-State Honors Orchestra. He studies music composition at the Music Institute of Chicago.

 


In addition to the ENTRY FORM, (download entry form) applicants must submit a cassette or CD of two contrasting selections, one of which could be performed with the symphony if the applicant should win the competition. (Vocalists should submit two contrasting arias in their original languages.) Entries will be screened by a committee from the North Suburban Symphony. Up to eight finalists may be selected to appear in a recital/competition to be held at Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest, IL on Tuesday evening, November 13, 2007. Selections to be performed in the finalist competition must be approximately ten minutes each and must be memorized.

The FIRST PLACE WINNER of this competition will receive a cash prize of $300 and the opportunity to appear as featured soloist with the North Suburban Symphony on May 4, 2008. An additional $200 will be presented at the performance with the Symphony, for a total of $500.

The SECOND PLACE WINNER will also receive $300, and will be offered the opportunity to perform with the symphony and receive the additional cash prize should the first place winner be unable to appear.

A THIRD PLACE PRIZE of $100 will also be presented. Two additional prizes of $50 for honorable mention may be awarded at the discretion of the judges.

Winners must be present at the awards ceremony following the competition in order to receive any prize.
